More About Harlem
Harlem is the birthplace of comedian Oliver Hardy with the annual commemoratory Oliver Hardy Festival held the First Friday of each October on Main Street in his honor. The Festival consistently draws more and more fans each year, usually in the tens of thousands.
The beginnings of Harlem ran along the Georgia Railroad. When the Georgia Railroad was built from Augusta to Eatonton, Georgia in 1835, Saw Dust was a main stop. The booming lumber town was founded in 1840, situated a mile from where Harlem is today. The town was extremely travel-friendly and often travelers stayed overnight in the town.
During the early Twentieth Century, Harlem had about 500 residents (approximately 2,200 presently) and remained fairly small and family-oriented.Harlem is truly a town of culture and refinement, for which the town has always been known. Residents are very proud of their little town.
