The History Of Harlem, Georgia

The beginnings of Harlem ran along the Georgia Railroad. When the Georgia Railroad was built from Augusta to Eatonton, Georgia in 1835, Saw Dust was a main stop. The booming lumber town was founded in 1840, situated a mile from where Harlem is today. The town was extremely travel-friendly and often travelers stayed overnight in the town.

During the early Twentieth Century, Harlem had about 500 residents and remained fairly small and family-oriented. Since then, the community has grown to over 2,750 people, yet still maintains its cozy, family-friendly status. Harlem is truly a town of culture and refinement, for which the town has always been known. Residents are very proud of their little town, wholeheartedly enjoying what it has become.
